Understanding God’s Plan for His Children in Ephesians 1

October 13, 20253 min read

The letter to the Ephesians opens with one of the most powerful truths in Scripture. God has given us everything we need to live as His children through Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul begins by praising God for His blessings and reminding believers that everything we have in Christ was part of His divine plan. Yet this chapter also raises a question that challenges many: if God knows everything and has already chosen us, where does free will come in? Paul’s message shows that while God’s plan is perfect and complete, we still carry the responsibility to walk in obedience and faith.

God’s Eternal Plan and Our Calling

Paul writes that God chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight (Ephesians 1:4). From the beginning, humanity was meant to live as God’s children. But sin, starting with Adam and Eve, separated us from that design. Through Jesus Christ, God restored what was broken. We have been adopted into His family by grace and marked as His through the gift of salvation (Ephesians 1:5–6).

Every blessing we have comes through Jesus, not through anything we could earn. Our inheritance is not found in the things of this world but in the eternal promise that God sealed through His Spirit (Ephesians 1:13–14). Once we know the truth of the Gospel, our souls are marked. Running from God only leads to emptiness because once we have encountered His truth, we cannot unknow it. The Holy Spirit confirms that we belong to Him, and that truth should fill us with both gratitude and reverence.

Paul reminds believers that everything in creation will come to completion in Christ (Ephesians 1:10). This means that God’s plan will unfold exactly as He wills, but we still have the freedom to choose obedience or rebellion. God’s knowledge of the future does not erase our ability to act. It simply reveals His sovereignty over all things. We were created with free will, but our choices reveal whether we align with His will or resist it.

Growing in Wisdom and Gratitude

Paul’s prayer for the believers in Ephesus shows what spiritual maturity looks like. He thanks God for their faith and asks that they grow in wisdom, understanding, and revelation of who God is (Ephesians 1:15–17). Knowing God is not about information but transformation. To walk faithfully, we must continually seek His wisdom and remember what we are fighting for, which is the eternal inheritance found only in Christ.

Paul’s words remind us that true power is not found in human strength, influence, or knowledge. Everything of the flesh will fade, but what is done in the Spirit will last forever. In Christ, believers have authority and hope that no worldly achievement can replace.

Ephesians 1 calls us to gratitude. To be chosen by God is not something to take lightly. It is an invitation to live with purpose, to seek His wisdom daily, and to remember that every gift, every moment of grace, and every opportunity for repentance comes from Him. The more we study His Word, the more we understand His will and the hope we have in Christ. Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.
