Standing Firm in a Spiritual Battle in Ephesians 6
Ephesians 6 reminds us that faith is not passive. It is active, steady, and rooted in truth. The Apostle Paul closes his letter by teaching how to live under authority, how to honor one another, and how to stand firm in a world filled with spiritual opposition.
Honor and Respect Under Authority
“Honor your father and mother” (Ephesians 6:2). This commandment carries weight because it reflects our obedience to God. When we show respect to our parents or to anyone placed in authority over us, we are reflecting the order that God established. Honor does not mean blind agreement. If what is asked of us goes against the Word of God, we do not follow it, but we also do not respond with disrespect. Respect is a reflection of character, not compliance.
This same principle applies to every kind of authority we encounter, whether parents, leaders, employers, or mentors. We are not called to be doormats, but we are called to be disciplined in how we respond. Respecting authority honors God’s design, while knowing Scripture protects us from being misled.
Recognizing the Real Enemy
Paul writes, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).
Once we recognize that the real enemy is spiritual, not human, we begin to fight with clarity. The devil thrives in deception, turning people against each other while he works unseen. When we understand his schemes, we stop fighting the wrong battles and start fighting the right way with truth, prayer, and faith.
The Armor of God
God’s Word is not just wisdom; it is armor. Each part protects a different part of our life and faith. The belt of truth keeps us grounded. The breastplate of righteousness guards our hearts. The shield of faith blocks every attack of doubt and fear. The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, gives us the authority to stand against lies and speak truth boldly.
Every day, the enemy looks for an open door. He uses fear, pain, confusion, and pride to draw people away from God. But when you stay rooted in prayer and grounded in Scripture, you are not defenseless. You are equipped.
Standing Firm in a Chaotic World
This world is full of darkness, disorder, and voices that twist truth for comfort. The enemy preys on unresolved wounds and uses distraction to keep people spiritually asleep. But the believer who knows the Word of God and stays in prayer cannot be easily moved.
Faith is not about ease. It is about endurance. We will face attacks, but we are not without weapons. The Word of God gives us clarity to see through deceit and the strength to keep standing when everything around us falls apart.
Reflection Question:
Where in your life do you need to put on the full armor of God and stand firm instead of reacting in the flesh?
