Pressing On Toward Christ Philippians 3
Philippians 3 reminds us not to let anything pull us away from our walk with Christ. Every distraction, temptation, or worldly desire that tries to shift our focus is a trap meant to slow us down. The Apostle Paul’s message is clear: serve God fully, knowing that all power, confidence, and strength come from Him alone. Nothing in this world compares to the worth of knowing and following Jesus.
Losing the World to Gain Christ
Paul writes, “We who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:3). Everything we have and everything we are comes from God, not our human effort. When walking with Jesus, we may lose things that the world values, but we gain everything that truly matters.
There was a time when I lived for what the world called success. The achievements, attention, and possessions seemed important, but following Jesus flipped that thinking completely. Paul said, “Whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ” (Philippians 3:7). The world’s gain is loss when compared to the eternal value of knowing Jesus.
When you are fully united with Christ, the things of this world lose their excitement. You stop chasing what fades and start desiring what lasts. There is no greater purpose than imitating Christ and becoming more like Him every day. And when you realize how short life is, it changes how you live. You start to see that the goal is not comfort but preparation, being ready for the day you stand before God.
Paul says, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14). That means no matter how tired or discouraged you get, you keep going. You keep pushing. You keep your eyes on Jesus and not on what this world tries to offer.
Living with Heaven in Mind
It is easy to get caught up in what this world values, but Paul warns us to stay focused. He reminds us that “many live as enemies of the cross of Christ” (Philippians 3:18). They mock Jesus and twist truth to fit their desires. The world is growing more deceitful, teaching that everyone has “their own truth,” which is nothing more than a coward’s way of avoiding accountability. People base their morality on feelings, culture, or convenience instead of God’s Word, and that is why darkness spreads. What is considered “good” by the world often stands in direct opposition to Christ.
That is why it matters who we surround ourselves with. Build relationships with believers who encourage your faith and hold you accountable to the Word. Stay close to those who push you toward God, not away from Him. “Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do” (Philippians 3:17).
If something in your life is unclear, ask God to make it clear. He will reveal what you need to know and strengthen you to keep moving forward (Philippians 3:15). Our goal is not this world. “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). That is what we are striving for. That is home.
Following the world might look rewarding, but it only ends in loss. Following Jesus may cost you, but it leads to eternal life. So thank God every day for allowing you to know, love, and serve Him. Ask Him for wisdom to go deeper and courage to keep pressing on no matter how dark the world becomes.
