Made Alive in Christ in Ephesians 2
In Ephesians 2, the Apostle Paul reminds believers that life apart from Christ is spiritual death. Before knowing Him, we lived by the ways of this world, following its desires and distractions without realizing who truly ruled it. This world is not our home. Scripture makes it clear that Satan has influence here, seeking to lead as many as possible away from truth and into rebellion against God. But through Jesus Christ, those who were once dead in sin are made alive again.
Saved by Grace, Not by Works
Paul begins by showing the contrast between who we were and who we have become through Christ. “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world” (Ephesians 2:1–2). Every person has a sinful past. Every one of us once lived in disobedience, deserving the wrath of God. Yet because of His mercy, God made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in sin (Ephesians 2:3–6).
Nothing we do can earn salvation. We are saved only by God’s grace through faith in Jesus. His mercy is the reason we are made new. This truth leaves no room for pride or self-glory. Every good thing in our lives flows from His kindness and purpose. We were created to serve God, not ourselves. Our lives are meant to point back to Him in everything we do.
United Through Christ
Paul then reminds believers that before Jesus, we were separated from God and strangers to His covenant (Ephesians 2:11–12). The law created division, but Christ brought reconciliation. Through His sacrifice on the cross, both Jews and Gentiles are now united under one body. The dividing wall that once separated believers has been torn down.
The blood of Jesus brings peace where there was hostility. He broke down the barrier between those who thought they were near to God and those who were far away. In Christ, all who believe are brought near and made one. No title, background, or past sin can separate us from the grace of God. We are now citizens of His kingdom, members of His household, and living testimonies of His mercy.
Ephesians 2 reminds us that we did nothing to earn God’s grace. We were dead, yet He gave us life. We were divided, yet He made us one. We were far off, yet He brought us near. Every part of our story points back to His mercy and power.
